The new and improved line of Detroit Diesel engines just got even better. You can now order Cascadias and Western Star 5700XE with the automated manual DT12 transmission, including PTO (power takeoff).

From a recent press release:

Both the Direct Drive and Over Drive DT12 transmissions are available for order with a proprietary rear mounted PTO on original Freightliner Cascadia® models with or without the Evolution aerodynamic package, and Western Star 5700XE models. This option is scheduled to be available for the new Freightliner Cascadia on January 1, 2018.

What does automated manual transmission allow users to do?

Kelly Gedert, Manager of Detroit Powertrain and Component Marketing at Freightliner, says it “offer[s] customers in the Bulk Haul tractor trailer segment a Detroit DT12 automated manual transmission with a PTO option in certain applications. The majority of these customers are more weight sensitive, which helps make the Detroit DT12 more attractive than other competitor automated manual transmissions.”

The DT12 PTO is configured for semi truck drivers exclusively driving on pavement. For non-jobsite uses, creates smoother shifting and better control. If you’re pulling a liquid trailer, dry or wet goods, or even moving floors, this is particularly helpful.
